Starting something new can feel a little overwhelming, so we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions about training at Valkyrie Grappling Academy. From what to wear to how classes run, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started on the mats. For more details, please see Our Code of Conduct.

  • No experience is required. Our academy welcomes complete beginners as well as advanced students. All we ask is that you come with respect, an open mind, and a willingness to learn.

  • If you don’t yet have a gi, wear clean, comfortable activewear without zippers or pockets. A gi will be required once you decide to continue training. Always ensure your training clothes are freshly washed before class.

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early, remove your shoes before stepping on the mats, and bow when entering the training area. Bring water, short nails, and a positive attitude. Let the coach know it’s your first time and they will guide you.

  • Not at all. Training in Judo or Jiu Jitsu will naturally improve your strength, fitness, and flexibility over time. All classes are scaled so you can go at your own pace.

  • We offer Kids Judo, Teens & Adults Judo, and Teens & Adults Jiu Jitsu. Each program is structured to suit the age group while maintaining our focus on respect, discipline, and growth.

  • Yes. Safety is a top priority. All students are taught to train with control, respect their partners, and follow our academy code. Coaches supervise every session to ensure a safe environment.

  • Eventually you’ll need a gi (uniform), but for trial classes regular activewear is fine. Please ensure clothing is clean and hygienic. A mouthguard may be recommended for sparring.

  • Yes. All classes are inclusive, and we encourage women to train. Respect is a cornerstone of our academy code, making the mats a safe and supportive place for everyone.

  • Our academy follows a clear code of conduct:

    • Bow when entering and leaving the mats

    • Greet your partner before and after training

    • Keep your gi and body clean, nails short

    • No shoes on the mats

    • Listen to coaches and respect your training partners
